In the past, people dreamed about smart homes that could assist you in your daily life, thanks to amazon’s Echo that dream is a little closer, and judging by its popularity on Amazon it is a step in the right direction.
The setup is incredibly easy. The only thing you need to do is to plug it, download the echo app on your smartphone, and follow the instructions. Echo requires a wireless internet connection to work. While the app is free, an Amazon account is necessary, and the setup is not possible without one.
Amazon’s Echo is very easy to use. Amazon Echo is a smart speaker, a device that is controlled by voice. The device’s form consists of a 9.25 inch (23.5 cm) tall cylinder speaker that includes a seven-piece microphone array that allows the device to listen and make itself heard from any direction within the room where it is installed.
It has two buttons, an action button which turns it on and silences alarms, and a mute button that deactivates its audio processing circuit, a red light will appear in that case. It also has a blue light on top of it that indicates its activity, when it is off its ready for requests, when it is in its processing the request. The volume can be regulated by turning the top ring of the device.
The device connects to the voice-controlled intelligent personal assistant service Alexa by saying its name. The activation word can be changed from Alexa to any other name by the user if so desired. The device includes a manually and voice-activated remote control. It can be used in conjunction with the activation word. The more you use it, the more it learns about your preferences, becoming faster and more efficient in the process.
The device has many features including voice interaction, music playback, making lists, setting different alarms, streaming podcasts, playing audiobooks, and providing weather, traffic and other types of information in real time.
Echo also has access to skills built with the Alexa Skills Kit. These are voice experiences developed by other companies that significantly increase the capabilities of any Alexa-enabled device (such as the Echo). Some examples of these new skills include answer general questions, order a pizza, get an Uber, and more. New skills are continuously being created to offer more services to the user.
It can also control several smart devices, becoming the “brain” of the house from which the user can control everything that is compatible with Echo. Some examples include lights, fans, switches, thermostats, garage doors, sprinklers, locks, and more. Like the skills, new devices are being made compatible and controllable with echo.
Devices like amazon’s Echo are going to become as common as a microwave or a freezer in every house. It offers a quick and easy way to control all the devices in our home from the conformity of a chair and using only our voice. It saves us precious time and makes our daily lives easier.
